West Hallam Playgroup began in 1967 in the rambling old rectory. Both Pat Gregory, who now lives in Carlisle and Norma Futers, who is still staff, got together with some other people with teaching, nursery nurse or nursing qualifications and planned the organisation. They were registered for 18 children and the fees were three shillings and sixpence (17p).

After 3 years the house was going to be demolished and playgroup were offered the football pavilion, and while it was far from ideal, it served its purpose till the school vacated the building which is now the Village Hall and Playgroup moved in and increased its sessions.

During the years the co-operative links with Scargill School have been mutually beneficial. Playgroup has evolved in response to changing needs and in line with the National organisation is now called West Hallam Village Pre-School.
